We know, #makchicmumsquad: it can be incredibly tough to keep the spark alive in a relationship! But carving out time to connect with your significant other is so important – and if you’re looking for some easy date night ideas, we’re here to help, with some of team makchic‘s personal recommendations:
Lu Sean’s pick: Latte Love Story, Malaysia Barista

As parents of young kids, date nights often revolve around dinner reservations and hurried conversations before bedtime duty calls. But this time, I wanted something different—something fun, hands-on, and totally outside our usual routine. So, I surprised my coffee-obsessed husband with a latte art workshop!
With an espresso machine already part of his daily ritual, I figured this would be a great way to level up his barista skills—and give us a chance to reconnect over something creative. The Malaysia Barista latte art workshop in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (run out of Hobby N Coffee) turned out to be a mix of learning, laughter, and caffeine-fueled fun. For 2.5 hours, we frothed, poured, and attempted to pull hearts for each other—some more successful than others! The workshop caters to both beginners and coffee enthusiasts, so whether you’re a total newbie or already dabble in latte art, you’ll walk away with newfound skills (and maybe an extra appreciation for your local barista).
Beyond the coffee, what made this date special was the joy of trying something new together—without interruptions from tiny humans. Plus, it’s a skill we can actually use at home, making our morning coffee routine just a little more special. So, if you’re looking for a unique, kid-free date idea that doesn’t just involve food, this is definitely one to consider. And hey, worst case scenario? You leave with caffeine and a lot of laughs—both of which are parenting essentials!
Nora’s pick: Outdoor Movie Night, SunSan Bake

Are you and your loved one both movie buffs and foodies?
On select days, SunSan Bake runs outdoor sunset movie nights at the lawn of their bungalow café at Taman Shanghai – on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights – where you and your plus one can enjoy a movie and cosy dinner under the night sky.
Apart from their dinner pasta and rice bowls, we would save some space for their truffle Shiopan (salt bread), or the many pastries and sweet treats for dessert! Reservations are required and a seat deposit of RM50 will be collected, which will be deducted from your dining bill. The movies are pre-selected, so you can check out their schedule here. Do note that they welcome pets too, so this is something to consider in case you have allergies.
Liyana’s pick: Getting Physical at Padelground

My husband and I picked up padel about half a year ago, and it’s been a fun activity for us to do together. Since it’s a doubles sport, we often play with friends and family, which makes it even more enjoyable. We usually hit the courts at Padelground in Mont Kiara, then grab brunch or dinner at Lola by Serai Group, depending on the time we play.
Because we both love the game, we’ve found ourselves geeking out over rackets and workout gear, swapping tips on techniques, and even toying with the idea of opening our own padel courts someday. We’re total opposites in personality, so it’s nice to have something we both enjoy—except, of course, when we’re playing against each other!
Hema’s pick: Luxe Movie Experience, Aurum Theatre

My husband and I are big fans of unique cinema experiences. We’ve tried everything from 4D cinemas with moving seats, to cozying up in comfy sofa seats at Play cinemas with the kids. Now, we’re waiting for date night to try out the Aurum Theatre by Golden Screen Cinemas. With plush, fully reclining seats (choose between private two-person sofas, plush recliners with private cabins or premium recliners with built-in fridges), plus soft pillows and blankets, here’s hoping no one falls asleep!
There are two halls which are made up of the intimate Comfort Cabins or stylish Escape Studios – or, for a real boujee experience, opt for the luxurious Getha Lux Suites. Why go for dinner then a movie when you can have both at once? The Aurum Pass (from RM150) includes a gourmet meal served mid-movie at the press of a button. At The Gardens Mall KL, enjoy signature platters from Jin Gastrobar or snacks like chicken wings, calamari, and teriyaki chicken skewers (we hear you can also grab yourself a signature cocktail!). Or opt for Hokkaido Table’s omakase or Kissa Café’s juicy burgers and umami fries at The Exchange TRX.
You’ll be escorted to your seat, given disposable slippers, and have access to wireless charging stations. The experience is designed to be as effortless as it is luxurious. Plus, watch out for promotions, especially Wednesday Movie Offers, because date night deserves a little extra magic!
Christina’s pick: Couples’ Texture Art, Arkateori

I love the idea of combining quality time and learning a new way of expression through Arkateori’s texture art workshop for couples. I enjoyed the literal hands-on experience with texture art; getting to actually touch and feel the materials, laying it onto the canvas, and working our way into the abstract was kind of liberating!
Being parents to our children, as well as carrying out the different roles we play with our parents, and in our workplace and communities, it’s so easy to lose sight of the relationship that truly holds the family together. The intimacy of the class space helped in this respect, setting the tone for couples to properly connect with each other, away from the busyness of day-to-day life.
I found this to be a wholesome session of talking to each other, relearning each others’ love language, and shedding some happy tears too. At the end, we got to take home the artpiece we worked on, which now adds warmth to our family living space!
Kimberly’s pick: Exploring the Arts, KLPAC

Being a longtime supporter of our local arts scene, I love discovering new and exciting events hosted by The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC). And with this local grand dame of the arts celebrating her 20th anniversary this year, what better time is there to support the incredible talents we have, here on home ground?
This Valentine’s Day, you can catch a special edition of KLPAC’s Golden Oldies series, ‘Yesterday Once More: Love Is All You Need‘, with renditions of evergreen classics from the 40s to 60s. Or if you and your partner love connecting over laughs, you could check out a comedy show, featuring some brilliant Malaysian comedians. Whether it’s a sunny musical, an introspective theatre piece, or a vibrant dance performance, a night out at KLPAC will always be one to remember.
