Family-Friendly Cinemas in the Klang Valley

[This article was first published on 20th January 2023 and has been updated as at 5th December 2024 by Irni Juliana]

Parents can finally complete a movie (relatively) uninterrupted; during the day and with the kids around, to boot! These cinemas are catered specifically to meet the needs of everyone in the family, with brighter lighting, lower audio, and a variety of cushy seating options. Standard cinema rules do not apply here, too. Kids are allowed to giggle, move about, and ask 101 questions about what’s happening in the movie!

Here are 10 family-friendly cinemas in the Klang Valley for your next family movie experience:

GSC Play is where the magic of movies meets the joy of play, creating a unique entertainment experience for families. Its Play halls boast a colourful, child-friendly zone designed to captivate young minds. The hall lights stay on, creating a super chill space where kids can roam, play, and enjoy the show.

You can also visit their family-friendly PlayPlus cinema halls at Tropicana Gardens Mall and IOI Mall Puchong, where you can cosy up together with the whole family at the PlayPlus Cuddle Couch, or sink into a personal soft PlayPlus Bean Bag. The playground within the hall will also keep any restless kids occupied, if (or more likely, when!), their interest in the movie wavers. If you are early, spend some time at the PlayPlus Lounge* that’s full of entertaining toys and fun equipment for the kiddos. This cinema pays close attention to hygiene, as socks are required both at the PlayPlus Lounge and the PlayPlus Hall.

2. Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), PlayPark

Check out the biggest cinema in Malaysia at IOI City Mall! Launched in May 2023, it is also home to the largest PlayPark, which comes complete with an in-hall playground, adjoining lounge and extended play area outside the hall. The littles will get to enjoy a reading corner, a fun “Soda Can” climbing tower, a ball pit and an interactive play wall by Champs – while bigger kids (6-12 year olds) can experience the “Popcorn Tower” – the longest slide located within a cinema. With diaper changing rooms, kid-friendly bathrooms and a breastfeeding room, the PlayPark cinema hall will definitely make watching movies together as a family a more accessible experience.

Don’t forget to visit GSC’s latest branch at KL East Mall as well, marking its 53rd cinema location and the third PlayPark in Malaysia.

3. Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), Sensory-Friendly Screening

Kudos to GSC for being the first in Malaysia to introduce sensory-friendly screening for neurodivergent audiences! The hall features dimmed auditorium lighting, lowered volumes and the removal of advertisements and trailers before the film. All halls are wheelchair-friendly, and come equipped with a nursery room, which can be used as a safe room for any children who may want a time-out. The number of guests in the hall will also be reduced for a safe, accessible and inclusive space for all.

4. TGV Cinemas, TGV Junior

From colourful playrooms for pre-show fun, to softer lighting and gentle audio that’s easy on little ears, TGV Junior has thought of everything to keep the kiddos happy. Plus, with dedicated kids’ toilets and diaper-changing stations, even the tiniest moviegoers are well taken care of.

Double up the fun at TGV Junior Hot Wheels, where kids will have the chance to enjoy half-an-hour of pre-movie fun at an exclusive, colourful City of Play. This colourful space features favourite characters and toys, such as a Hot Wheels ramp corner, wall scrabble and mega block play. Amenities include a kids’ toilet and a nappy changing room, and the movie hall itself will offer family-friendly seats, brighter lighting and softer audio.

Children will get to be the stars of the day with a trip to Lil Star at Dadi Cinema! Little early birds will get to chill in their very own Lil Star Playland ‘lounge’ before heading in to catch the show. Once in, kids will get to watch their favourite shows on cute, customised chairs with animal designs. The soft play area, with mini climbing structures situated in front of the screen, is perfect families with younger tots. There are also seats available right at the same level as the play section, so you won’t need to watch the (second part) of the movie standing at the playground below!
