Throughout school, I was convinced that math just wasn’t my thing. Every struggle with a sum or a disappointing exam score felt like another piece of evidence confirming my terrible math skills. Fuelled by this confirmation bias, I shut the door on the science stream, and all the careers it could have offered.

Years later, when my daughter found herself facing a similar situation, I didn’t want her to limit her options the way I did. After trying several enrichment programmes, we discovered Eye Level, which changed her (and my) approach towards learning math.

About Eye Level

Based on Korean teaching methods and with an established presence in Malaysia for over 20 years, Eye Level’s philosophy is centred on “eye level education”; namely, through understanding a child’s individual learning needs and enabling them to progress at their own pace. In addition to Eye Level Math, they also have English courses , Play Math for preschoolers, and digital math courses as well.

The Eye Level Math programme stood out to us for several reasons:

  • Developing Lifelong Skills: Eye Level Math goes beyond memorisation and calculations. They foster critical thinking aligned with the Malaysian Ministry of Education’s focus. It equips students with the ability to analyse, understand, and solve problems logically – valuable skills not just in math, but throughout life – by using real-world applications, word problems, and multiple approaches to problem-solving.
  • Personalised Learning: One-on-one coaching and a customised progression ensures my daughter masters each concept before moving on.
  • Self-Directed Learning: The programme cultivates autonomy, encouraging her to tackle problems and celebrate achievements.
  • Safe and Organised Environment: Eye Level prioritises not just a strong curriculum, but also a organised environment with a focus on safety and hygiene.
  • Bonus Benefit: The programme even introduces data interpretation and probability through formats like Venn diagrams and graphs, which makes this a valuable, future-forward skill.

Now, as an 11-year-old, my daughter enjoys Eye Level Math for her own reasons:

  • A Sense of Accomplishment: Completing a level and earning a sticker for her Eye Level Passport map fills her with pride.
  • Bite-Sized Learning: The 45-minute classes are short, manageable and interesting.
  • Fun and Engaging Homework: The workbooks are clear, enjoyable, and reinforce concepts learned in class.
  • 3D Learning Tools: Building blocks and Thinking Cubes help her grasp depth perception and spatial reasoning in a unique way.

Learning at Your Child’s Eye Level – Tips for Parents

While Eye Level has provided a fantastic environment for self-directed learning, here are some additional tips you can use to cultivate this valuable skill in your child at home:

  • Follow their curiosity: Pay attention to their interests and encourage them to explore those topics further. This could involve providing them with books, online resources, or even taking them to relevant museums or workshops.
  • Embrace open-ended questions: Instead of simply providing answers, ask questions that prompt them to think critically and find solutions on their own.
  • Celebrate the journey, not just the destination: Applaud their effort and problem-solving skills, not just the final answer. Give them some control over their learning experience and let them know that it’s okay to make mistakes; that’s how we learn and grow.
