Researchers in the UK say that baby foods currently on market shelves there fall short of infants’ dietary weaning needs.
Some 479 products available in UK markets – including Boots, Heinz, and Cow & Gate – were found to contain fewer nutrients than homemade food, and only as much nutrients as the breast milk they are supposed to supplement.
A team of researchers lead by Dr Charlotte Wright, based at the University of Glasgow’s School of Medicine, also noted that half of the foods tested were classified as sweet – mostly sweetened by fruit sugars rather than added sugars – which might subsequently steer the infant palate towards unhealthy choices.
Sometimes it is helpful to be reminded that the objective of weaning is really to get babies to try new tastes, textures and flavours, as well as to boost their energy and nutrient intake as they change their diets away from breast milk.
