Not everything flies as smoothly as his viral pictures. Alan Lawrence was overwhelmed with bittersweet emotions when his fifth son, Wil Lawrence, was born. Proud to be a father but concerned of Wil’s underlying condition, which he felt was going to negatively impact his son as well as his family and relatives.
At the time, Alan could not help but feel burdened instead of what he now views as a blessing. It was not until his wife, Nikki Lawrence, put things into perspective that Alan saw something much more profound. “I am so grateful to have a son, I don’t care what other people may think. You need to get over yourself,”
Using photography as a medium to showcase his learned experiences, Alan usually places his son levitating casually as a metaphor. Anything is possible and anyone that wants to fly can do so regardless of condition or status.
Now an advocate of Down Syndrome, Alan and his son have gone on to show others that Down Syndrome does not mean the end of the world, proudly claiming “my son has become a light and not a burden to our family.”
