The National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) has teamed up with Merck Sharp &Â Dohme (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd to launch the #livemysunshinehpv campaign, a digitally-led programme to educate Malaysians of the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cervical cancer.
According to the Malaysia National Cancer Registry Report 2007, cervical cancer is the third most prevalent cancer among Malaysian women, and the fifth most common cancer in the entire Malaysian population. Also, over 2,000 new cervical cancer cases are reported each year.
HPV (especially type 16 and 18) is known to be the cause for about 70% of cervical cancer cases worldwide, most women will be infected with HPV at some time in life. Although the infection will usually clears up on its own, many especially the young adults between the age of 16 to 25 still don’t know about it, and that puts them in a vulnerable state, says Dr Saunthari.
