changing table

You’ll most probably change about 2,700 diapers by the time your baby reaches his first birthday, so it’s understandable if you want to create a comfortable place for diaper changes.

There are several benefits to using a changing table. For starters, you’ll be able to do diaper duty at a comfortable level and you’ll have your diapering supplies within reach. Changing tables have storage space such as shelves, baskets and/or drawers that you can use to store essentials like wipes, rash ointment, and toys to keep your baby busy. Changing tables usually include a vinyl changing pad. Washable cotton and terry-cloth covers are sold separately and come in a variety of colours and patterns.

When it comes to changing tables, you have two options: a basic changing table with a shelf or shelves or a combination dresser and changing table. With either style, look for the following features:

1. Sturdiness
A changing table or dresser shouldn’t wobble when you give it a light shake. Test the model you’re considering. If it feels rickety, choose another model.

2. Storage
A handy place to store diapers, wipes and creams is always good to have. Make sure you can reach for these items without having to bend or take your eyes off your baby.

3. Changing Pad
Pads with curved mattresses and soft sidewalls are very useful for newborns as these keep baby from rolling back and forth.

4. Wheels
Some models are on wheels so you can move them from room to room. If you’re opting for this, make sure it has brakes that lock to keep it stable when parked. And keep the wheels locked when you’re using the changing table.

5. Height
If you’re tall, go with a taller table or dresser. If you’re shorter, aim lower. If you do choose to use a dresser as your changing table, secure it to a wall to prevent it from tipping.

6. Convertibility
You might use a changing table far less than you thought if your baby won’t lie down quietly to have their diaper changed. To get more mileage out of it, some parents buy changing tables that can be converted into a dresser, desk, bookshelf, CD rack, or TV table.
