This Week’s Buzz On The Internet – 17 August 2017

Internet Buzz#1 – Mummy cartoons on point

internet1

We’re delighted to find out we aren’t the only ones who want to give up first thing in the morning. Enter Adrienne Hedger, a cartoonist who draws (see what we did there?) from her own life experiences and makes light of overwhelming situations, especially those which take place before that morning coffee! Her cartoons are relatable and funny because we’ve all gone through the same thing. Go here for more about Hedger – go on, we all need a good laugh, right?

Internet Buzz #2 – A reminder to cherish the here and now

My advice to you is not to book that African safari quite yet. I am not advocating that you must fulfil those bucket list items right this minute. Rather, my request is to take a minute to revel in the every day and in those people who continue to show up in your life. When you do book that trip, make it the best one yet. As my doctors constantly remind me, we never know what is around the corner,’ wrote Rachel Huff in what would be her last post before she passed away on 11 August 2017.

It’s not something we usually share but it’s good to be reminded how important it is to make memories, even small, everyday ones. As Huff wrote, if we’re lucky, those little memories are what our children will remember the most.

Internet Buzz #3 I’m a Mean Mommy and you should be too

internet5

We know exactly how it feels to be a tad mad at the little ones every once in a while, and how much guilt we feel after our own meltdowns. This week, we’re sharing a gem of an article which confirms that it happens to the best of us, and that it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

We ‘Mean Mommies’, it turns out, are miracle-workers once in a while,’ writes Jordan Reid on her blog Ramshackle Glam, which includes a list of lessons to remember to try our best to stay happy and be less mean.

‘But you know what happens to rough water? It settles down; it always does. All it needs is a little time. And besides: Apologies, you know, they work wonders – and teaching your child that it’s OK to say “I’m wrong” even when you’re a grown-up? That’s something close to a miracle’, she writes.

Take a look at Reid’s blogpost and join in the shout of solidarity: mean mommies aren’t all that mean actually. We’re just normal human beings.

Internet Buzz #4 How To Dad

Jordan Watson from Auckland, New Zealand, is fast becoming a firm favourite with the makchic team. His ‘How to’ videos serve as tutorials for dads (and mums) on the everyday things we parents go through. His latest video, ‘How to put a kid to sleep’, is very watchable and just as funny as the rest of his tutorials. We’re definitely the Tired Dad, Way Too Into It Dad and the Celebratory Dad on most nights, depending on our mood. Which one are you? Follow Watson on Facebook and take a look at all his other tutorials for a laugh or two!

Internet Buzz #5 DIY Slime

The latest buzz on social media for kids is the DIY Slime craze. According to ABC News, slime has even replaced the much loved fidget spinner. While it helps the little ones get excited about science, as ten year old William of Berri, Regional SA says, “It’s fun but when it sticks to stuff, Mum gets really angry,” we have to warn you: beware of how sticky it all gets.

Make sure you take precautionary measures when doing science at home. As Rebecca Arnold of Murray Mallee Regional Science Hub in Southern Australia highlights, “Protect your eyes, wear gloves to protect your skin, and of course wash your hands afterwards before you go to eat, because you certainly don’t want the kids ingesting anything they shouldn’t be.”

Adult supervision is important, depending on how old the kids are. “Particularly with [ingredients] that might react and create a new substance,” she adds.

Hope you and your kids have fun playing with slime! Excuse us while we look for some Borax…
