Things to do in February 2020

February is filled with fun activities for the family. There’s a space camp, fairy tea party, farm visit, children-friendly orchestra and much more!

1. DPAC Spring Festival

The Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC) is once again hosting this Spring festival to celebrate the new Lunar Year.  There will be seven different acts by Kwang Tung Dance Company, Tay Cher Siang, Colour of Voices and more! Click here for more info.

2. AstroNutz Space Camp

Play the roles of space explorer, scientist and engineer as you undergo AstroNutz training modules, and learn how complete space missions through problem solving, creative thinking and teamwork. Click here for more info.

3. Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra Family Fun Day: Let’s Tour The World

Did you know that the MPO is home to musicians from more than 29 different countries? With music as a common language, the orchestra uses its diversity to produce a plethora of breathtaking sounds. Gerard Salonga takes us on an exotic voyage – world music with a classical flair! Featuring works by Bernstein, Smetana and de Falla. For tickets, click here.

4. A Radiant Red Celebration at Central Market Kuala Lumpur

Head to Central Market and experience exciting activities to mark the beginning of the Year of the Rat. Be greeted by the God of Prosperity for good luck and be mesmerised by the Dragon Dance making its way through the markets. There are endless selections of cheongsams, antique jewelry and much more.

5. Valentine’s Special: Chocolate Roses Workshop

Do something different this Valentine’s Day. Instead of giving roses to your loved ones, why don’t you learn to make chocolate roses from scratch? Pre-registration required so book your slots here.

6. Theatre: The Gruffalo

This family favourite is a story of the Mouse, a wheeler-dealer Fox, an eccentric old Owl and a maraca-shaking, party-mad Snake – and of course the terrifying Gruffalo. This stage adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s award-winning children’s book is suitable for ages 3 and up. More info here.

7. Activities at Ilham Gallery

  • Art-Inspired Coding Projects for Kids in collaboration with CodeJuniors: Yee I-Lann’s Kerbau

Make a 3D water buffalo and combine this with a robot, then programme it to complete a maze challenge peppered with traffic cones.

  • Create your own puppet with Cinzia Ciaramicoli

Participants will draw and make their own puppet guided by master puppeteer Cinzia Ciaramicoli from Italy. Children will choose an animal to save from global warming and draw it on paper. Using recycled fabric and decorative material, they will then create the puppet following the initial sketch.

  • Art Science Workshops in collaboration with Atom and The Dot: Working with Wax Resist

Learn about well-known artists who work with wax resist and art forms that use this technique, as well as the science behind it. Then make your own wax resist artwork that you can hang on your wall.

Date: 27 February (Thursday)

Time: 2.30 p.m. – 3.30 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. – 5.30 p.m.

Fee: RM50/child. All materials provided.

Age: Recommended for 4 to 12 years. A guardian must accompany children below 9.

8. Empowerment Workshop 

 TCP Training and Workshops conducts English language training for job-related functions as well as various English communication, money matters and life-coaching workshops. Their aim is to empower Malaysians, particularly women, with the knowledge and skills to grow personally and professionally.

9. Fairy Tea Party: A magical experience for kids (Editor’s note: Event postponed to September due to concerns over Corona Virus)

Part of the Ahimsa Life Festival,  the Fairy Tea Party takes place in an enchanted forest complete with a forever true wishing well, a real-life fairy and a miniature fairy village. Enjoy fairy paint and pamper, fairy terrarium, rainbow slime making, fluffy unicorn dust and fairy crystal dust picking. A magical feast awaits.

10. Explore the World Treasure Hunt

Looking for something fun to do as a family? This would be it. Each family will have to work as a team to find all the building blocks at the ‘treasure’ points using the map provided. The blocks will then be used to build a creation as per the instruction cards. The kids will then be required to present their creations and stand a chance to win awesome prizes. 11. The Marriage Pitstop

13. Visit to the Frangipani Farm

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and visit the Frangipani Organic Farm in Gombak where folks from Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) will educate kids about environmental conservation and the positive effects of organic farming.  For registration click here.
