Scientists in the UK have discovered a technique that will allow babies to be created from three people as soon as two years from now.
The technique, which combines eggs from two women and sperm from a man, can be used to prevent potentially deadly mitochondrial diseases, which affects one in every 6,500 babies.
Mitochondria are tiny power generators found in each cell in the human body, and if damaged, these cells will not have enough energy to function properly. This will lead to further health complications – even death.
Despite finding no evidence that the it is unsafe, UK regulators have not okayed the procedure just yet.
