Myra Mahyuddin’s List: Baby Goods Musts and Skips

Every time we meet a soon-to-be-first-time mum, we feel like we end up discussing “the list” – that crazy checklist of stuff you are told you simply must get before the baby arrives. But do you really need it all? Thirteen months after Myra’s son was born, here’s her reflection on that list – what she really used and which ones collected dust during her son’s infancy.

Most Used

  1. Aden + Anais Swaddle: These swaddle blankets are soft and big enough to be used for nearly everything. I’ve used them as a stroller blanket, swaddle, stroller cover, changing pad, and more.
  2. Bugaboo Bee Stroller: When my husband and I were deciding on a stroller for Noah, we wanted something that was beautiful and functional. The Bugaboo Bee fit the bill.
  3. Prince Lionheart Flexibath Foldable Bathtub: The tub is attractive, folds and stores easily, and it’s been great for taking with us on travel.
  4.  Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Pure Silicone Orthodontic Soother: This really completely depends on your baby. Noah definitely likes to soothe himself this way.
  5. Digital thermometer: A great tool to have especially after vaccination jabs.
  6. IKEA Samla Box: A fantastic, versatile and economical life-hack diaper caddy.
  7. Beaba Babycook: So easy to make Noah’s meals – just chop up the fruits or veggies and the Beaba does the rest. Totally worth it!

Didn’t Use Enough

  1. Burp cloths: My son never really did the spit-up thing. I think this one totally depends on that one factor.
  2. Bouncer: While we owned this item, I found it non-essential, as my son was happy to nap in his cot, car seat, or carrier. He absolutely no interest in the bouncer, and the pack and play was useful for maybe a month at most.
  3. Moby Wrap: I would have loved to use this more but the weather didn’t permit. Plus it was hard to put on by myself.
  4. Bumbo: A nice seat but Noah was too strong and too active to be constrained.
