Were you aware that until recently, the echoes of learning and laughter in a classroom were unfamiliar sounds to the lakeside community of Kampung Chuweh, Banding Lake, Perak? Now, the Horlicks School Journey Initiative (HSJI) carried by the GSK brand Horlicks has pooled resources to create a Learning Centre to prepare the children of Kampung Chuweh for school and the outside world.
The children of Kampung Chuweh have to take a 35-minute boat ride followed by a 15-minute car journey to get to the nearest school. This is why Horlicks has partnered with the Malaysian Association for Social Workers (MASW), a non-governmental organisation, to create a Learning Centre and Play Group earlier this year for over 30 students in the village. Early childhood educator Jameyah Shariff will not only conduct learning-through-play programmes, but will also assess the children’s learning abilities. Additionally, a brand new boat will send the older children to the school on the nearest mainland.
