BabyCenter Malaysia recently released its list of top 25 names for baby boys and girls for 2014. For girls, the top 5 names are Nor (unchanged), Zara (up 3 places from last year), Aishah (also up 3), Alicia (down 1) and Sophia (down 3 places). In the boys section, the 5 hottest names were Mohamed (unchanged since 2013), Adam (unchanged), Amar (leaped 12 spots up), Ahmad (down 1 spot) and Rayyan (unchanged).
Meanwhile, in its Annual Baby Names Survey and the Top 100 Baby Names of 2014, BabyCenter announced that the most popular name for baby boys is Muhammad in the UK and Jackson in the US. For baby girls, Sophia is the most popular name in both the UK and the US (for the fifth year in a row!).
While the name Muhammad might come as a surprise to many in the UK, a closer look at the data shows that the results came from the website’s survey and not official figures (UK’s Office for National Statistics has Muhammad as the 16th most popular name). Even so, this bodes well for diversity in one of the most metropolitan nations in the world.
Some of the favourite names of the year are inadvertently inspired by the big movies and shows that really rocked the box offices: Elsa and Anna (Frozen), Frank, Francis and Wright (House of Cards), Fitzgerald and Huck (Scandal), and even Tyrion and Daenerys (Game of Thrones)!
