The tradition of ‘wayang kulit’ or shadow play has been performed for over hundreds of years. Characters carved out of leather were brought to life through the hands of the ‘dalang’ (shadow artist). Illuminated against a cloth background, the ‘wayang kulit’ brought together villages through a unique combination of lesson, ritual, and entertainment.
Inspired by this ancient art form, TBWA\Kuala Lumpur and Eveready came together to give a new lease of life to an overlooked household item: the humble torchlight. Lending a modern twist to the pre-bedtime ritual of children’s story time, the Eveready Book of Play came to life.
Each intricately crafted page brings Sang Kancil, the mouse deer famous in Malay folklore, to life by reigniting the magic of classical literature. The book has even made news on international shores by winning the Silver Lion in the Branded Content and Entertainment category at Cannes Lions 2015. With the flick of a flashlight, children’s story time is transformed into special bonding experience for both parent and child.
