Yusof Gajah is a decorated local artist who originally rose to prominence due to his signature illustrations of elephants, hence the adoption of his ‘Gajah’ name. Eventually, Yusof Gajah became more involved in the local children’s storybook scene, citing the openness and naivety of children as an easier way to promote creative thinking at a young age in a country that he feels is more oriented towards “parroting”. A mindset that lacks the ability to think outside of the box.
“My hope is to see more children who love reading, who enjoy buying books rather than spending money on toys or unnecessary things. If you give a book [to a child], it will stay with them for a long time. It can be passed on to future generations. I still keep a few books that my daughter used to read. That’s precious.”
Now’s your opportunity to create precious memories of your own. From June 1 to 14 at Silverfish Books in Bangsar Village II, the Yusof Gajah Picture House, Yusof’s own picture book platform, hopes to put the spotlight on some local picture book illustrators and authors.
