8 Must-Do’s for Kids and Parents at The Cooler Lumpur Festival

Publika will be host to a flurry of activities come this Friday when the Cooler Lumpur Festival, Southeast Asia’s first festival of ideas, kicks off. With more than 40 events over the course of Friday 20 June to Sunday 22 June, there’s bound to be something for everyone.

Kids and their parents can look forward to #FAST Junior, which features programmes and activities curated by the British Council, Borders and Makchic for young ones. There will also be a workshop for parents on how to read to their kids, plus a graphic novel workshop for teens.

Storytelling with Shamini Flint

Shamini Flint has World Cup Fever and will see how many kids will catch it too! Come along and listen as Shamini discusses her two books about football, Ten and Diary of a Soccer Star and the adventures and misadventures of her kids as she sets out to turn them into Ronaldo and Messi. There will be quizzes and prizes!

Teens’ Graphic Novel Writing Presentation by The British Council 

Date: Saturday, 21 June
Time: 2.00 pm – 3.00 pm
Venue: White Box, Publika

The results from a three-day graphic novel writing workshop will be presented at the festival. Expect to see some of the work displayed in written form as well as illustrated. Graphic artist Andrew Drilon will also be giving a sharing session to interested parties on how he got into drawing and graphic novels.


EORI

Meet & Greet EORI and Colouring Contest

Date: Saturday, 21 June
Time: 3.30 pm – 4.30 pm
Venue: White Box, Publika

It all begins when Ingki, who comes from ink, brings Eori home to the biggest tree in the jungle which is filled with storybooks. Each time Eori reads a book and wears the magic hat, Eori is taken into the magical realm of stories where he becomes the main character of that story.

Come meet EORI and join the contest to colour EORI to win wonderful prizes!

This competition is open to children aged 6-10 years old. Please be advised that participants will have to bring their own colouring supplies.

Animal Tales: Storytelling for Little Tykes! by Kamini Ramachandran

Age Group: 4 – 8 years, no babies and toddlers permitted

Join renowned international storyteller Kamini Ramachandran in this highly participative storytelling session! Spend the morning with this storyteller and you’ll not only get to listen to stories but make your own animal puppets to take home!

Kamini will tell stories for 30-minutes and a simple craft activity will follow. Basic craft materials are provided. Parents are encouraged to assist their children with the craft activity and be responsible for child safety. The craft activity involves the use of scissors. Bring your children and join us for an exciting storytelling session by the charismatic Kamini.

Kamini Ramachandran is a storyteller with enormous stage presence and respect for the traditions of oral literature. She is also the co-founder of MoonShadow Stories. Approaching TESOL: Teaching English to Your Children by Dr George Iber

The workshop will present and demonstrate a variety of ways that parents can introduce their children to learning the English language.  It will show how the combination of traditional reading strategies combined with widely available internet resources, such as YouTube, can make the experience of learning English fun and effective.

About Dr George Iber

George Iber is a Professor – TESOL Graduate Teacher Education Program, Abraham S. Fischler School of Education, Nova Southeastern University. He earned a Masters from the University of Iowa. Since 1992 he has worked as a full-time faculty member training teachers at the college and university level. He has developed syllabi and degree programs for B.S., M.S. and Ed.S. teacher training programs emphasizing cultural studies and ESOL methodology. He has taught these courses, and others, in Florida, The Bahamas, Jamaica, Belize, The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, and Mexico, using a blended delivery model consisting of live and online course elements.
