There are numerous books on the market that target expectant or new mothers. Although these baby books address issues that may arise during the nine months of pregnancy, they don’t tell you some things that would make a new mother’s life much easier. For example, as a new mother, you will rush through all of your meals as if you were in an eating contest! And no one ever tells you how you will become an adult and your non-adult friends will fade away.
Here are more missing gems:
1. How to function on very little to no sleep
Sleep deprivation is an inevitable part of having a baby. Newborn babies wake frequently to feed or for comfort during the night. New parents try “sleep when the baby sleeps”, but it often doesn’t feel enough.
2. How to look put together postpartum
Since your baby won’t be the only one photographed by your family and friends, you’ll need a few postpartum clothing tricks that will hide the bulges and leaks without sacrificing comfort. (Think dark-coloured tops and bottoms with colorful accessories.)
3. Using the bathroom after delivery
At first, the thought of passing urine can be a bit frightening because of the soreness and because you can’t feel what you’re doing. To help make the “movement” easier, Babble.com suggests drinking plenty of water, and eating fresh fruit, vegetables, bran and wholemeal bread.
4. How to deal with judgemental mothers/relatives/strangers
Unless you’re up for a debate, it’s easier to just smile and nod while you’re around judgemental people — and get away as quickly as possible.
5. Why is your baby crying
Wouldn’t it be great if we knew why exactly he or she is crying?
6. How to cope with feelings of guilt
Whether a woman is unable to breastfeed her newborn baby or has to return to work after her maternity leave ends, no one should ever think she’s the worst mother.
7. How life changes after becoming a mother
You won’t be able to travel like you used to and date nights will now be spent watching a movie and pausing every 10 minutes while baby screams. The beauty of it all? You’ll never be lonely again. This baby that depends on you for absolutely everything will become your right-hand man, your mini-me, your sidekick, your best friend. Along with those tears of frustration will come countless tears of joy.
