7 Hottest Pregnancy Trends of 2014

Last year saw plenty of pregnancy trends like Royal baby fever, ultrasound parties, and announcing pregnancy before the 12-week mark. But it’s 2014, which means new trends are upon parents-to-be.

Parenting and pregnancy website, The Bump, has identified new parenting ideas that are starting to catch on. “Whether it’s taking a ballet-inspired prenatal workout, registering for an experience or creating an over-the-top AND viral pregnancy announcement, pregnancies today are taking on a whole new meaning,” says Rebecca Dolgin, editor-in-chief of The Bump.

Here’s what’s trending for 2014:

Prenatal Barre Workout
Say goodbye to prenatal yoga and Pilates routine because the barre workout is expected to be the hottest prenatal exercise this year. The low-impact exercise utilises the ballet barre for a full-body workout, making it perfect for mums-to-be!

Grandma’s Getting a Baby Shower
Yes, you read that right. With more and more grandparents taking care of their grandchildren, they too need their own supply of baby gear. With a grandma shower, friends and family can gift her with a car seat, stroller, high chair and other gear that can cost hundreds of dollars.

Experiential Registry
Don’t be surprised the next time you find ‘a couples’ massage’ on a baby registry. Expectant mums will still ask for the essentials, but they’ll also add more relaxing items to their lists. The Bump says date nights and other treats will be requested so that new parents can use them before the baby arrives or after to keep the romance alive.

Tech-Savvy Parenting
Mums- and dads-in-waiting are embracing technology in all sorts of ways. With innovative gear and apps slowly creeping their way into the parent-sphere, tech-savvy mothers may soon add onesies that monitor babies’ sleep, car seats that install themselves and onesies that alerts parents for diaper change in their registries in 2014.

Social Media Announcements
Expectant parents will be upping the ante with their pregnancy announcements. While last year was the year of creative gender reveals, 2014 is expected to see announcements that are more entertaining and viral than ever. Here’s to seeing over-the-top pregnancy announcements on our news feed.

Notable Nicknames
Instead of using traditional full names, parents will be opting for nicknames. Unisex names are also predicted to be a hot trend this year, especially for parents who aren’t finding out the gender. The Bump says Bailey, Dylan and Kai are just some top gender-neutral favorites that we’ll be seeing for both boys and girls in 2014.

Sophisticated Nurseries
When it comes to baby’s abode, nursery design will switch from chevron and accent walls to abstract art and large prints. Bright colours, bold shapes and exaggerated strokes on walls are expected to be complemented with felt plush toys, leather gliders, velour accents and faux-fur rugs.
