Family Activities in Klang Valley this August 2019

Amble along into August with our list of fun activities you and your family can enjoy around the Klang Valley!

1. Leonardo da Vinci Opera Omnia at the National Art Gallery

Leonardo da Vinci is a man that requires little introduction. Known for his knowledge and work in wide-ranging areas such as architecture, engineering, anatomy and botany, he is also considered as one of the greatest masters of all time, with his paintings displayed in museums all over the world. Don’t miss the opportunity to view life-size reproduction of 17 of his masterpieces, such as the ‘Mona Lisa’  and ‘The Last Supper’ in our own National Art Gallery, until the 15th August. There will also be a free screening of the biographical movie ‘The Life of Leonardo da Vinci’. 5 episodes will be screened; enjoy Part I & II on 3rd August, and Part III to V on the following day.

2. Family and Children’s Programs at ILHAM Gallery KL

The Art Discovery Tours is back at the ILHAM Gallery with more fun and educational art sessions for your kids to discover this August! Start your month with a bang at the ‘Making Modern Art with Magnets’ on 1st August. In collaboration with Atom and the Dot, children will be introduced to modern art and artists such as Jackson Pollock and learn about magnets before making their own painted magnets to bring home. Recommended for children ages 3 to 5 years.

If this is not the right activity for you and your child, try checking out the other fun sessions they will be running in August, such as the Comic Drawing Workshop with author of Wilbur & Faraday, Pepper Lim, Storytelling & Art Sessions with author Nor Azhar Ishak, and the Meet and Greet session with the author of ‘The Weight of Our Sky’, Hanna Alkaf. 3. Kabut in The Park 3.0

A car boot yard sale, Kabut in The Park 3.0 will feature 45 #Konmari warriors and non-retail owners that aim to reduce waste in our landfills by giving items in good conditions a second lease on life. Located at a 117-year-old cultural icon within a park, bargain seekers get to shop while enjoying the luscious greenery and lake view. Expect to find electronic gadgets, toys, clothing, vintage gems, and even plants. There is bound to be something for everyone, pets included!

4. Storytelling Sessions by The Story Book

Experience the classics from the Ladybird Tales: Goldilocks & the 3 Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, Chicken Licken and Three Little Pigs by listening, watching, performing and participating in interactive activities. With 2 sessions in August, this storytelling activity is perfect for families with children 3 to 10 years. Register here for the 1st session, and here for the 2nd session.

5. ArchaeokidZ Program at Kidzania

Calling aspiring Paleontologists, Historians, Archaeologists, and Conservators! Journey back in time by enrolling your children and yourselves into the ArchaeokidZ Program at Kidzania. Excavate fossils, learn about dinosaur bones and the Mayan language throughout the entire month of August. Fellow KAIs can create primitive-inspired jewellery, paint their nails with earthy colours, also design and name their own dinosaurs, while toddlers can enjoy making soaps shaped like Dinosaurs. 6. Sayur In The City: School Holiday Programme

Children are natural-born nature and animal lovers, but as city dwellers, it is almost impossible for them to be one with nature. Eats, Shoots & Roots brings to you Sayur In The City which is a programme where children can understand the origins of their food, learn about healthy eating and connect with their environment, through 3 different workshops: ‘Plant Play’, ‘Turning Trash Into Food’ and ‘An Insect Life.’ They will learn how to harvest, wash, cut, cook and serve their own meal each day. 7. Child Drama Workshop Series

Children who are keen to explore their hidden talents will enjoy the Child Drama Workshop Series hosted by Me Books Asia and led by Anrie Too, an actress and speech and drama educator. The workshop welcomes children from ages 4 to 12 years. During the 3-day event, participants will learn movement and focus, imagination and storytelling. Get your tickets here.

8. Just Write – Fiction Writing Workshop for Teens

Brigitte Rozario, a freelance writer and editor, runs writing workshops for teens ages 12-19. This August, she will conduct a Fiction Writing Workshop for Teens. The class is taught in a lecture format, with videos and group/individual activities. Students will learn plot, dialogue, inserting emotions and fleshing out characters, to name a few.

9. MomMe Time

MomMe Time is an event where mums can share their struggles at a safe, zero-judgment place.  Hosted by Ili Hizzad, a mental health advocate and Certified Infant Massage Instructor, the event will include speakers such as Pn Mazni Zainal Abidin, a Hospital Play Consultant in UKM Medical Centre, Dr. Izam Suziani, doctor and emotional wellbeing advocate, social media influencer and entrepreneur, Maria Elena Zarul and Azalia Suhaimi, artist and maternal mental health advocate. There will be door gifts, activities, refreshments, and a kids’ play area, to allow mums to focus on the event. Get your tickets here.

10. Kids Scuba Camp

Scuba dive in the heart of the city with the Kids Scuba Camp conducted by Club Nomad. Designed for children, participants are introduced to the PADI Seal Team Program. Learn basic scuba skills such as proper breathing, clearing of masks, recovering regulator and swimming underwater while experiencing the sensation of being weightless.

Educators from OPSTOPUS will also provide specially designed STEAM (Science, Technology, Education, Arts & Maths) workshops with topics on the ocean. Talks and discussions on the underwater world and oceanography will be held daily. The camp is suitable for children ages 8 and above who are comfortable with being in the water.

11. Avengers Coding STEM Camp

Equip your child with essential coding skills by registering for the Avengers Coding STEM Camp conducted by Code Juniors. In this Avengers-themed camp, students from ages 5 to 8 years will learn to code, create animation, puzzles, and games. Students should bring along a tablet with Bluetooth capability. Loan units are subject to availability. You may register for the event here. Sessions will also be conducted at Setia Alam and Desa Parkcity.

12. Sentul Festival 2019

Dignity for Children has provided education for more than 8,000 underprivileged children in the past 20 years. In celebration of its 20th anniversary, and in the spirit of fostering a culture of lifelong learning, Dignity is bringing together leading community experts and providing over 40 workshops at its educational centre in Sentul Festival 2019. Enjoy quality bonding time with your child, in Parent & Child Embroidery workshop by Nature Story or Parent & Child Soap Making Workshop by Robin Handmade Soap. Your kids could also learn woodworking skills with Adi & Aida and outdoor living skills with Dynamic Learning Strategy. Spread over 4 days and 2 weekends (10-11 August & 17-18 August), you could sign up for any of the workshops here.

13. Dr Little Club: Where Does My Food Go After I Eat It?

Naturally curious children would often want to know what happens to food after they eat it, why humans need food to survive, and how one digests food. Dr Little answers these questions by getting children to understand what is happening in their tiny bodies. Each child will receive a Dr Little T-Shirt upon registration. Recommended for children from 4 to 7 years, you could register for the event here.

14. Woodworking Workshop For Kids

Kevin Ho of Kevin Build is the mastermind behind the Woodworking Workshop For Kids. Participants will be taught correct and safe techniques when handling tools, practice hammering, and screw driving before building and taking home their woodwork at the end of the day. The workshop is suitable for participants from 6 to 17 years old, and assistance will be given for sawing and drilling. Woodworking Workshop For Kids will be conducted every Saturday this month, with each session resulting in a different build. Choose from building a robot, bookshelf, stool, caddy, crate, or register for all. Register for the workshop here.

15. #AnakAnakMalaysia Walk

Walk hand-in-hand into Merdeka Day with your family by joining the #AnakAnakMalaysia Walk. With the theme #BetterMeBetterMalaysia, the walk aims to educate people that to inspire change, one should be the change. The 5.5km walkathon will be held on Merdeka Day across Klang Valley, Penang, and Iskandar Puteri. Participants will receive goodie bags, wristbands with interchangeable pins and t-shirts. #AnakAnakMalaysia is a collaboration between Eco World Development Group Bhd and Star Media Group.
