Pregnancy-safe Beauty Products

Having struggled with dull, dry skin and break-outs since puberty, I was really looking forward to finally experiencing the oft-mentioned “pregnancy glow” during my two pregnancies.

Unfortunately, my hormones decided to hand me the opposite : my skin went berserk, my skin problems seemingly coming out not just to join the party, but escalating to a full-blown music festival.

I knew I needed specific products to target the problems, but as any mom-to-be can tell you, there’s always the worry that the products we use will affect the little bundle of joy growing inside us.

So I started trawling natural beauty blogs and medical sites to find out what to avoid- parabens, phthalates, mineral oils and retinols being the main no-no’s. With my personal skincare philosophy in mind (natural ingredients, botanical extracts and cruelty-free), I also stalked nature-loving celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Thandie Newton and Emma Watson to find out what their favourites are.

After some experimenting, I found these safe beauty products that made my skin feel amazing whilst also giving me peace of mind.

The Beauty Chef Probiotic Skin Refiner

A multi-tasking toner that refines, hydrates and boosts collagen all with one sweep.

My take: I’ve always found toners to be a bit pointless, but this magic potion left my skin feeling smooth and clean, without any tightness. I haven’t had a single blemish since using this!

Edible Beauty No.3 Exotic Goddess Ageless Serum

A youth elixir supercharged with hyaluronic acid, beta glucan and antioxidants to enhance plumpness and boost radiance.

My take: One of my besties swears by this, and now so do I. My skin has never felt so plump and fresh since I was 25 (I’m 38) and I’ve gone on to have an epic love affair with this range. The owner is awesomely sweet too and sends me personalised handwritten notes plus free samples with every order.

Badger Company Damascus Rose Zinc Oxide Face Sunscreen SPF25

This non-greasy and non-Nano zinc oxide formulation protects your skin whilst nourishing it with seabukthorn, rosehip and pomegranate extracts.

My take: I’ve used this brand on my eldest since he was a baby and it’s the best sunscreen for him, but it was a bit too greasy for the face. I was happy to find that this left me with a nice, semi-matte finish instead of looking like an oily seal.

RMS Beauty Rose-Marie’s Essentials Set

A simple, go-to starter kit with everything you need (foundation/concealer, illuminator, powder, and mascara) for a quick, I-woke-up-like-this look.

My take: This set was perfect for days I couldn’t brave the world completely makeup-free but didn’t want to spend too much time to ‘put on a face’. It gave me a bare-faced, dewy look with a subtle glow.

TARTE Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Airbrush Foundation

Powered by Amazonian clay and enriched with light-reflecting gemstones, this talc-free powder buffs on smoothly to deliver flawless, natural-looking coverage that lasts.

My take: My go-to foundation for special occasions and date nights. Goes on beautifully with a kabuki brush and gives a flawless finish without me looking like a cakey mannequin.

Antipodes Moisture-Boost Natural Lipstick

A creamy, highly-pigmented lipstick that is all-natural and gives your lips a luscious matte finish with a hint of shine.

My take: I was really surprised how pigmented this lipstick was. It is also very moisturising without feeling icky. If you love red lipsticks, ‘Hungry Like The Wolf’ is the perfect shade.

Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminizer

This concentrated radiance liquid can be used on its own or mixed into foundation for that magical lit-from-within natural glow.

My take: I blend this on the bridge of my nose and cheekbones or mix into my foundation for an instant complexion pick-me-up whenever my skin is looking tired or sallow.

Herbivore Botanicals Pink Clay Mask

A beautifying and softening mask for when your skin needs some extra TLC and nourishing. Great for calming sensitive skin, leaving it with a radiant glow.

My take: Whenever the rug rat deigns to nap (he’s just reached that age of dropping his naps. Boo!), I slap this on and steal a quick 20-minute shut eye. It leaves my skin feeling deliciously soft, pampered and really calms the redness.

Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream to Brighten and Depuff

With Panax Ginseng and Coffee Bean extract, this energising eye cream is like a shot of coffee (literally) to your eyes. Now everyone can be a morning person!

My take: The first time I FaceTimed my BFF after I started using this and not seeing her for 4 months, her first words were, “Where are your eyebags??!”. Thanks to this, I’ve found the confidence to lay off the under-eye concealer.

Vanessa Megan Marine Collagen Anti-Ageing Night Cream

This cream- enriched with potent anti-ageing ingredient IBR-Dormin, organic goji berries, spirulina and rosehip oil- is touted as the natural alternative to Botox.

My take: The first night cream that gave me baby-soft skin and the right level of hydration without causing me to break out.
