BabyNames

Are you struggling to decide on an ideal name for your baby? This search can be very tricky; the name you choose will be a defining piece of his or her identity for a lifetime. But don’t worry, we’ve got tips and ideas to help you on how to pick the perfect name… sans stress!

  • Brainstorm: Start by jotting down every name that comes to mind. A favourite flower? Or a dear relative? It starts with an idea. So… ready, set, go!
  • Keep it Simple: Mom of twins Li-Hsian recommends names that are easy to pronounce, and wouldn’t be verbally massacred by teachers in Malaysian schools or relatives.
  • Communicate: Naming the baby could be a big deal between you and your spouse so keep the conversation going. Also, tread lightly when shooting down your partner’s suggestions.
  • Trawl the Internet or Buy a Book: To make choosing a baby name easier, hit the book shop and check out the shelves of baby naming books. Websites such as Nameberry.com and BabyCentre has lists of popular baby names.
  • Consult a Third Party: First-time mom Wei Yenn suggests discussing it with your spouse, parents and in-laws. “That way, everyone is happy; no need to fight for who gets naming rights!”
  • Don’t Tell Anyone: People simply can’t help telling you what they think. “Someone will always say ‘I know someone with that name and he/she isn’t very nice,’ or provide another reason why a name isn’t suitable,” says first-time mom Sharon Choo.
  • Keep Your Options Open: It’s a good idea to keep a couple of options open until the baby has actually arrived and you’ve gotten a sense of his or her personality.
  • Take Your Time: In the end, this is a choice for you and your spouse. Ignore any obligations, any unwanted advice, and any other pressures.
